The going is officially good, good to soft in places, for Paddy Power Gold Cup day at Cheltenham on Saturday.
Un Temps Pour Tout to make winning start over fences
We have previewed the big race separately here and have sided with Buywise and Art Mauresque in a typically competitive race. The former ran on into fifth place in this race last year and made a pleasing seasonal reappearance when third to Sound Investment at Aintree last month. He still has relatively few miles on the clock and has a big handicap in him this season.
Art Mauresque is a stable companion of Sound Investment and is rated the pick of the Paul Nicholls-trained duo after an impressive win at Cheltenham’s October meeting. He is taken to reverse Newton Abbot form with Irish Cavalier.
The meeting gets under way at 12.40 with the Triumph Hurdle Trial with a field of just five runners. Oceane and Romain De Senam are likely to dominate the betting market after impressive wins at Kempton and Wincanton respectively. Preference is just for the Paul Nicholls runner who has winning form over another of his rivals in Fingertips from a previous meeting in France.
David Pipe has always held Un Temps Pour Tout in high regard and the six-year-old can make a winning start to his chasing career in the 1.15. He ran well in top staying hurdles at Cheltenham and Aintree in the spring before winning the French Champion Hurdle in the summer. The gelding cost £450,000 when sent to join Pipe in 2013 and he can take a first step towards the Cheltenham festival meeting and a possible tilt at the RSA Chase in March.

Snag List fancied in Cheltenham finale
The Murphy Group Handicap Chase at 1.50 has attracted a strong field with several of these likely to be contesting the big staying handicaps during the course of the season. Spring Heeled did not take to the Aintree fences in the Grand National but came back to form when second to Sadler’s Risk at Limerick last month.
Shotgun Paddy lost his way last season after finishing third in the Betfred Classic Chase at Warwick in January while former Scottish National winner Godsmejudge also has something to prove. With fitness concerns about many of these, it may pay to side with Perfect Candidate who finished second here in October behind Whats Happening. He led on the run-in but was caught in the final one hundred yards and should strip fitter on Saturday.
The three miles and one furlong handicap hurdle looks wide open with several recent winners in the field. Dark Spirit won well here at the October meeting and could still be competitive off an 8lbs higher mark. Atlantic Gold, Sir Mangan and Milan Bound will also have their supporters. The final race on the card can go to Willie Mullins with Snag List, an impressive winner on his debut at Gowran Park.
