- Ground: The ground is the single biggest influence and certainly needs to be considered when you place a horse racing bet. Occasionally you will come across horses that can handle any conditions, but for the most part, horses will be better suited by certain surfaces. If it looks like coming up soft for the St Leger, stick to backing horses with proven form in the mud.
- Pedigree Pointers: At the highest level in horse racing pedigrees can often give clues as to how a horse is going to perform. If you are planning on backing a horse that is tackling the St Leger trip for the first time, have a look at their breeding to see if he or she is related to any horses that have won over a similar distance. Pedigrees can also give an indication on how likely it is a horse will handle soft or quick ground if they are racing on a new surface for the first time.
- Trainer/Jockey Combos: Sometimes the top trainers can have more than one runner in the St Leger. Aidan O’Brien in particular usually has multiple runners and his most three recent winners were ridden by the number one stable jockeys, Ryan Moore (2) and Joseph O’Brien. In the Epsom Derby Ballydoyle jockey bookings often mean nothing, but in the St Leger the top jockey will usually be on the best horse.

The St Leger Ante-Post betting market is the last to be formed out of all the classics. It isn’t run until September and ante-post St Leger markets will only be formed a few months before the race. The risk with St Leger ante post betting is that if you back a horse that is not declared for the race, you will lose your stake. Some bookies like William Hill and Paddy Power may go non-runner no bet (NRNB) for the St Leger a few weeks before the race. Win and each-way betting are available in this market and generally, it is 1-2-3 1/5 odds for each way bets.
St Leger Betting: Win/Place/Each Way
The St Leger markets most will be familiar with are the win and each way markets. A win requires your selection to be first past the post, while an each way bet is a wager on the win and place markets. Most of our top St Leger betting sites form place markets too where you can place a single bet on a horse to finish in the money. With 7 runners or less a place bet requires a top 2 finish to generate a return. With 8 horses or more in the race, a top 3 finish is needed.

St Leger: Tricasts/Forecasts
Tricasts and forecasts are very popular St Leger wagers and it is easy to see why so many find them to be attractive bets. Straight forecasts (1-2) and tricasts (1-2-3) contain just 1 bet and they require you to predict the first two or three home in the correct order. Reverse forecasts and combo tricasts contain 2 and 6 separate bets respectively and they work the same as straight forecasts/tricasts except the horses can finish in any order.
St Leger In-Running Betting
