Olympic Games: A Brief History and Team GB Stars Of The Past
An idea that was inspired by the ancient games held in Olympia in Greece from around 800 BC, it was fitting that the first modern Olympic Games took place in Athens in 1896. Only 241 athletes competed in the inaugural event, but nowadays thousands take part. The games are held every four years with the host nations selected by the IOC (International Olympic Committee). London has hosted on three occasions, most recently in 2012.
Team GB (Great Britain) has a rich and illustrious history at the Olympic Games. In the next few sections, we will look back at some of the most famous (and infamous) British performances in Olympic Games history. From multiple medal winners to one hit wonders, once you read the next few paragraphs you’ll be counting down the days to the start of the next Olympic Games!
Team GB Olympic Heroes: Sir Steve Redgrave
Sir Steve Redgrave was a gold medal-winning machine for Team GB. He incredibly won at a record five consecutive Olympic Games between 1984 and 2000. His first Olympic Gold for rowing came in Los Angeles in the Coxed Four, while his last came at Sydney 2000 in the Coxless Four. Redgrave had to overcome adversity in his life as he is a diabetic and also suffers from ulcerative colitis. In 2001 he was made a CBE and few athletes deserve that title more than Sir Steven Redgrave. He is a true British Olympic Legend.
Team GB Olympic Heroes: Linford Christie
A three-time Olympic medallist, Linford Christie remains the fastest man in British history. His record set in 1993 of 9.87 still stands and he won Olympic gold in the 100m in Barcelona in 1992. However, there have been suspicions about Christie for some time and he has failed more than one doping test over the years. His British record and Olympic Gold medal still stand though and for now, at least, Linford Christie remains one of Team GB’s true Olympic Games legends.
Team GB Olympic Heroes: Mo Farah
Who could forget the dramatic gold medal wins by Mo Farah at London 2012? The Somalia born Team GB long distance runner won Gold in both the 10,000m and 5,000m in 2012 and 2016 and he is one of only two men to achieve this incredible feat. Kids up and down the country were doing the Mo-Bot after his big wins but the star has also courted controversy.
His long time coach Alberto Salazar was recently banned for doping violations and this has threatened to cast a shadow over his achievements. However, he remains a clean athlete and he will be targeting gold again at Tokyo 2020 in the 10,000m. It would take a brave person to bet against him completing the hat trick and you can back him at around 7/2.
