What Constitutes a Top Sports Betting Bonus?

There are a number of factors to consider when deciding if a sportsbook promo is a good one or not. A good online betting site bonus could include free bets, they could include low wagering requirements, they could include no expiry dates. They could include all of these things.

The T&Cs at each bookie can vary greatly when you’re comparing welcome bonuses. Or existing promotions for that matter. All top sports betting bonuses will include key terms, but they will be achievable and fair key terms. Although a welcome promo might offer £1000 in free bets, it’s a terrible bonus if the wagering requirements are, say, 50x the bonus amount. It’s not realistically achievable. The less wagering requirements, the better the bonus.

If you don’t see an expiry date on your free bets, you’re onto a winner there. However, most betting sites do attach an expiry date to their bonus and free bets, so you’re best off understanding when you need to use them by. Three days is a little short, seven isn’t too bad but 30 is even better.

Something else to consider is the odds they stipulate as an absolute minimum in their bonus offer. A top betting bonus will be around the 1/2 (1.50) mark, but there are some bookmakers out there who say that you can’t qualify for the free bet unless your first bet is at odds of over Evens (2.0). Ok, so this is still achievable, but we’d much rather have the 1/2 thanks very much.

Best Betting Bonuses – What Do Bookmakers Offer?

Not every bookmaker is the same. There are a lot of variations to welcome bonuses and promo offers for existing customers. It’s the same with the T&Cs, they’re all different too. In general, though, as much as some bonus amounts on offer can be completely different, the promotions themselves can follow the same structure. There are a few different types of bonuses a punter can enjoy, so let’s list them.

  • Bet to Get
  • Matched Deposit Bonus
  • Money-Back Special
  • No Deposit
  • Mobile Only
  • Bet Club
  • Loyalty Free Bets

Bet to Get

moplay new customer welcome offer

Probably the most common welcome promo to be honest. A lot of bookies use this one. You’ve no doubt seen a bet £5 get £20 or a bet £10 get £30 welcome bonus on offer at one of the top sportsbooks in the UK. The William Hill bet £10 get £30 welcome offer is an example of exactly that.

All you need to do is register at your new online betting site, deposit, and place a bet. Obviously read the T&Cs first to understand the qualifying terms, such as the minimum deposit and the minimum betting odds.

Once your bet has settled, you’ll get a free bet up to a certain value. More often than not it’s not one free bet. It’s split into two or three lower denominations.

Matched Deposit Bonus

Sometimes referred to as a deposit to get bonus, but they’re the same thing. It’s exactly what it says on the tin. Deposit a certain amount, get a bonus.  The matched deposit bonus can be anything from 50% right up to 300% at some sports betting sites.

An example of a sports betting bonus such as this is the one at 10Bet at the time of writing. The 10Bet welcome promo is a matched deposit bonus. You don’t see many at sportsbooks these days as they’re more commonly seen at online casinos. Nevertheless, if you fancy this type of bonus, check out our 10Bet review for more details on their new customer offer.

Money Back Special

This is normally always related to your very first bet. If your first bet loses, you’ll either get your stake back in free bets or as real cash. Please bear in mind that it’s the first bet that’s the important part of this promotion. Don’t test the waters with a new bookmaker on a £1 acca then place your proper bet and expect to get your money back if it loses. Unibet’s welcome offer is a good example of this particular bonus offer.

No Deposit Bonus

What are they? They’re so rare these days that not many new punters know what they are as they’ve never seen one. Essentially, free bets were given to you as soon as you signed up. No need to deposit any money, nothing. The bookies soon realised that this wasn’t a great tactic as a lot of punters were simply signing up, enjoying the free bet, then leaving never to be seen again. Unless they won of course, then they would withdraw their funds and then never return. Although these are rare at sports betting sites, you do still this type of promotion at online casinos.

Mobile Bonus

Virgin Bet is a prime example here. A mobile bonus because you can only bet with them on your mobile. As many bookies shift to a mobile-first way of thinking, some offers are geared towards just mobile users. If you’re on desktop, forget it, you’re not in fashion anymore so to speak.

To get punters switching to betting on mobile or a tablet device, some mobile betting bonuses are more lucrative than their desktop counterparts. Not all bookies offer mobile betting promotions, though, so please check out our sports betting reviews to understand who’s at the top of the mobile betting A game and who isn’t.

Bet Club Bonuses

This is an existing customer perk. Some sportsbooks have a bet club that you can opt-in and enjoy free bets at. For example, if you bet £25 over the course of a week, you’ll be rewarded with a £5 free bet. If you’re a frequent bettor, using a sports betting site that has a bet club is a no brainer. A free bet just for doing what you normally do? Yes please!

Loyalty Free Bets

Paddy Power might tell you that loyalty is dead, but it’s not true. Ok, so bookies might not drop free bets into someone’s account as frequently as they may have done a few years back, but they still reward loyalty.

Free bets arrive in a variety of ways depending on who you’re betting with. Being part of a VIP club is a sure fire way to receive free bets and perks. Other than that, you could receive a free bet on your birthday, you could get one simply by betting a certain amount every week, or you could get one on the back of a promotion you’re taking advantage of as an existing customer. Or why not ask live chat or customer support? As the saying goes, if you don’t ask you don’t get.

What Else is Available for Existing Customers?

The list is long, and we’d be here all day listing all of the different promotions at all of the best betting sites. However, there are some common promos that are extremely popular amongst punters at betting sites licenced in the UK. They include:

Live Betting Odds Boosts
Pre-Match Enhanced Odds

Acca Boost
Acca Insurance
Best Odds Guaranteed (BOG)
Money Back Special

PayPal Betting Bonuses – Are There Any?

It’s a popular question and one that we feel needs answering and explaining. The answer is yes and no. There are no specific bonuses that state they are exclusively for PayPal users only, but there are bonuses that accept PayPal. What we mean by this is that payment method exclusions will be listed in the T&Cs of each bonus offer. If PayPal isn’t excluded, then it’s a PayPal betting bonus, you can get the offer if you deposit via PayPal.

William Hill PayPal, bet365 PayPal, it doesn’t matter, always check the key terms. Just because the e-wallet is listed at some of the top sports betting sites in the UK, it doesn’t mean that it will be eligible for their bonuses. Hills are a prime example. They exclude all e-wallets from their welcome bonus offer.

Why Do Bookmakers Exclude E-Wallets?

There’s a simple answer for this. Back in the day, when free bets were handed out left, right, and centre, they were being abused. Because people were taking advantage of the free bets so much that some bookies decided enough was enough, and they decided to exclude e-wallets from betting promotions altogether. You saw them all the time; coral free bet, a Ladbrokes free bet, a Paddy Power free bet, they were everywhere. Not anymore, sadly.

Sports Betting Bonuses – Positives and Negatives

As with anything in life, nothing’s perfect. There are always positives and negatives to everything. Sports betting bonuses in the UK are no different. We’ve already outlined above some of the great promotions available, but let’s run you through some of the pros and cons of online betting bonus offers.

Best Bonuses for Sports Betting – The Pros

  • Deposit bonuses are more popular due to the fact that there are less terms to adhere to.
  • Some of the new online betting sites offer great value when it comes to their welcome bonuses as they simply want to attract new customers.
  • Betting bonuses are a great way of using free bets or money that’s not yours and turning it into profit that you can withdraw.

Best Signup Bonuses for Sports Betting – The Cons

  • When minimum odds have been set in the T&Cs, it can often be tough to turn the free bets or bonus funds into profit that you are able to withdraw as real cash.
  • The wagering requirements can be very unachievable. It can often prove a costly exercise as sometimes you’re betting with real money and bonus money.

Sports Betting Bonuses – Fill Your Boots!

To sum up the page, if you’ve not yet taken advantage of some of the welcome bonuses on offer, please do so. Some of them are even risk-free.

Of course, betting should be done responsibly, but why not sign up for as many bonuses as possible? You might not have much money at your disposal for a matched deposit bonus or a bet and get welcome promo, but there are plenty of promotions out there where you don’t have to part with much of your own money. What’s even better is if you place bets on sports every week anyway. If you do, it makes sense to grab the bonuses on offer as to not always use your own funds.

It doesn’t matter if you grab one bonuses or 20 bonuses, you’ll find what you’re looking for here at My Betting Bonus. It also doesn’t matter whether you’re on the lookout for a new customer off or a regular promo for existing customers, there really is something for everyone here.

Best Betting Bonuses FAQs

Right here at My Betting Bonus. We’ve listed some on this page, but we also have a number of sportsbook reviews which will list every single welcome offer a bookie has on its books. Please check out our sports betting sites page if you want to browse all of the bonuses on offer. Pick one, pick ten! Enjoy.

No. Well, welcome bonuses are only available for new customers. The name of the bonus kind of gives that away; welcome bonus. It’s not a welcome back bonus. However, there are plenty of other promotions at sports betting sites for existing customers to enjoy. Some bookies have more than others, so feel free to do your due diligence before deciding which bookie to use.

No. They’re very different bonuses. It all depends on your personal preference in all honesty. If you love a free bet, take a free bet bonus. If you love a matched deposit bonus, go for that. The only thing we would add is that the wagering requirements tend to be a lot better and more attainable with matched deposit bonuses. However, there are key terms that must be met for every offer, so make sure you adhere to those, otherwise, you won’t be getting paid out anything.
