The feature race on day 2 of Royal Ascot on Wednesday is the Group 1 Prince Of Wales’s Stakes at 4.20.
A Shin Hikari set to star at Royal Ascot
Japan’s A Shin Hikari is currently the highest rated racehorse in training and he is odds-on favourite for the big race. He won a Group 1 in France last time out in heavy ground by ten lengths so there are no concerns over the soft ground at Royal Ascot. New customers to Paddy Power can get odds of 5-1 about A Shin Hikari who will be ridden by Yutaka Teke.
The big danger looks to be Found who beat Golden Horn in last season’s Breeders’ Cup Turf. Aidan O’Brien’s filly has not quite been at her best so far this season but has the assistance of Ryan Moore in the saddle in what is likely to be a tactical race.
The action gets under way at Royal Ascot at 2.30 with the Group 3 Jersey Stakes. There are several improving performers here including the unbeaten Castle Harbour and Thikriyaat, representing the Newmarket yards of John Gosden and Sir Michael Stoute respectively. Preference is just for the proven Classic form of Ribchester, third in the 2000 Guineas behind yesterday’s St James’s Palace Stakes winner Galileo Gold.
We have previewed the Group 2 Queen Mary Stakes at 3.05 here. All eyes will be on American raider Lady Aurelia who broke the track record at Keeneland on her debut. The big worry for Wesley Ward’s filly is the soft ground and it may be worth taking an each-way cover bet on Al Johrah. She will handle the surface and the French-trained filly looks good value at around 10-1.
Secret Brief (left) should handle the soft ground in the Royal Hunt Cup
Secret Brief bids to follow up Lincoln victory
Usherette is another leading French-trained runner at the meeting in the Duke Of Cambridge Stakes at 3.40. Andre Fabre is quite sweet on the filly who won with a bit in hand at Newmarket last time. The each-way value in the race could be Godolphin’s Always Smile who would have won at this meeting last year but for deviating off a straight line in the closing stages.
The Royal Hunt Cup at 5.00 is as competitive as ever and the ground could influence the outcome here. Low numbers appeared to have an advantage on Tuesday and that could be good news for Lincoln winner Secret Brief. Others with chances are the soft-ground loving Donncha and the Irish-trained Hasanour, an eye-catching second at Naas last time.
A good run from Hasanour would be a clear pointer to the chances of Anamba in the Sandringham Handicap at 5.35. She has won two of her three races and could prove better than Listed class. Czabo represents Classic form in this race after finishing fourth in the Irish 1000 Guineas.
